EU Ambassadors Approve 15th Sanctions Package Against Russia, Targeting "Shadow Fleet" and Third Countries
On Wednesday, 11 December, European Union ambassadors agreed on a new package of sanctions against Russia in response to its military aggression against Ukraine. This is the 15th set of sanctions imposed by the EU on Russia and its associated individuals and organisations, the Hungarian Presidency of the EU Council reported on social media platform X.
It is noted that the 15th package of sanctions will also include new restrictive measures against Russia's ‘shadow fleet’ - additional third-party vessels that carry out activities aimed at facilitating or supporting actions or policies that support Russia's war against Ukraine.
The package also provides for the imposition of sanctions on people and organisations from Russia and third countries that indirectly contribute to the military and technological strengthening of the Russian Federation by circumventing export restrictions.
In her turn, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the approval of the new package of sanctions against Russia on social media platform X.
‘The EU and its G7 partners are determined to keep up the pressure on the Kremlin. I welcome the agreement on our 15th package of sanctions, targeting in particular Russia's ‘shadow fleet’,’ she wrote.
In this regard, European Council President Antonio Costa stressed that ‘we must continue our efforts to further limit Russia's ability to wage war’.
