EU Support for Ukraine Tops Agenda: Josep Borrell Makes Fifth Visit to Kyiv
On Saturday, 9 November, European Union High Representative Joseph Borrell arrived in the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, on an official visit to assure Ukraine of Europe's continued support.
The head of European diplomacy announced this on the X network.
‘This is my 5th visit to Kyiv since Russia's full-scale invasion and my last as HRVP. EU support for Ukraine has been my personal priority during my mandate and will remain at the top of the EU agenda,’ wrote Borrell, who is set to leave office next month.
Republican Donald Trump's victory in the US election has raised fears in Ukraine and Europe that Trump could end Washington's support for Kyiv's fight against Russian intervention.
‘The message is clear - the Europeans will continue to support Ukraine,’ Borrell, who is due to step down next month, told an accompanying AFP journalist.
‘We have supported Ukraine from the very beginning, and during my last visit to Ukraine, I am sending the same message: we will support you as much as we can,’ he said.
‘Nobody knows exactly what the new administration is going to do,’ Borrell said, noting that incumbent President Joe Biden still has two months to make decisions.
Europe has collectively spent about $125 billion in support of Ukraine since Russia's invasion in 2022, while the United States alone has spent more than $90 billion, according to the Kiel Institute's tracker.
Borrell, who will meet with senior Ukrainian officials during his visit, said EU countries decide ‘when and how to increase’ their support, if necessary.
