First Group of Ukrainian POWs Under 25 Returns Home in Istanbul-Brokered Exchange

Ukraine has begun a new staged prisoner exchange with Russia, with the first group of Ukrainian prisoners of war under the age of 25 safely returned home, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced, as The Gaze reports.
The exchange is taking place in accordance with humanitarian agreements reached during talks in Istanbul, and is expected to continue over the coming days.
“Our people are home. Ukrainians are returning from Russian captivity,” Zelenskyy stated. “Among those being brought back now are the wounded and severely wounded, as well as young defenders under the age of 25.”
The president described the process as “complex” and “sensitive,” with negotiations ongoing almost daily. He emphasized that Ukraine expects the full implementation of the humanitarian agreements reached in Istanbul and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to securing the return of all those held in Russian captivity.
“We are doing everything to bring each and every one of them home,” Zelenskyy said.
Andriy Yermak, head of the Office of the President, echoed Zelenskyy’s message, confirming that the exchange had officially begun and would unfold in several stages.
“This is a difficult and extremely important process,” Yermak wrote. He reiterated that Ukraine is working around the clock and remains committed to returning all of its captured citizens.
The exchange marks a significant humanitarian breakthrough following prolonged diplomatic efforts and highlights renewed cooperation on humanitarian issues amid the ongoing war. More details on subsequent phases of the exchange are expected in the coming days.
As The Gaze previously reported, delegations from Ukraine and Russia reached an agreement on a new prisoner exchange during talks in Istanbul, Turkey, on Monday. Ukraine also proposed a meeting between the leaders between 20 and 30 June.
