French actor, producer, and writer Alain Delon, whose heart stopped forever yesterday, not only achieved international fame but also became a symbol of European cinema during the golden age of the 1960s and 1970s. With his striking looks and incredible photogenic quality, Delon wouldn't have risen so high without his genuine acting talent. Over his career, he starred in nearly 90 films.
Here are five of Alain Delon's best films that have become iconic and lit up his star on the global stage.
"Purple Noon" (1960)
This first adaptation of the famous novel "The Talented Mr. Ripley" brought Delon true popularity. Alain Delon played Tom Ripley and retained his status as the actor who best embodied this character. He managed to do so effortlessly, thanks to his charm and charisma. Delon also convincingly portrayed the cruel and violent side of his character.
"Le Samouraï" (1967)
Director Jean-Pierre Melville created an unforgettable exploration of criminal life, infused with philosophical undertones. It's one of the finest noir films ever made. Delon plays an assassin pursued by both the police and the organisation that hired him. "Le Samouraï" is not only Melville’s greatest work but also a jewel in Delon's career.
"The Swimming Pool" (1969)
This is a slow and beautiful film. The luxurious mansion in which the action takes place, the sunny weather, which partially hides the gloomy plot. Alain Delon and Romy Schneider play lovers on holiday. Tension begins to rise when the protagonist's ex-lover and his teenage daughter join them. This is a stylish French thriller that is memorable for its visual effects and very explicit scenes for its time.
"Le Cercle Rouge" (1970)
Another cinematic gem from Jean-Pierre Melville, also featuring a stellar performance by Delon. "Le Cercle Rouge" is a mysterious crime thriller, one of the most unconventional heist films. Almost a deconstruction of the genre, "Le Cercle Rouge" is a meticulously crafted masterpiece that will leave audiences in awe.
"Mr. Klein" (1976)
This is a haunting drama in which Delon plays an apathetic art dealer who exploits Jews persecuted by Nazi Germany. However, things get complicated when the fascist authorities begin to suspect that he himself is Jewish. A brilliant film, filled with sharp political commentary.
In recent years, Alain Delon made few public appearances, but was an active supporter of Ukraine. In 2022, after speaking with President Volodymyr Zelensky, Delon declared, "If I were 50 years younger, I would join the Ukrainian army." In solidarity with the Ukrainian people, the cinema legend recited Taras Shevchenko's "Testament" in French. In April 2024, the President of Ukraine awarded Alain Delon the Order of Merit.
As reported by The Gaze, the legend of French cinema, world-famous actor Alain Delon passed away on Sunday at the age of 88.
Alain began his career in 1957, and among the most famous works of the legend of French cinema are such films as The Leopard, Rocco and His Brothers, and Samurai.
The actor's health deteriorated after suffering a stroke a few years ago. And in 2022, his son announced to the world that the actor intended to die by euthanasia.
From the very beginning of his stardom, Alain Delon immediately became a sex symbol of France. His name became synonymous in the mass consciousness with the standard of male beauty.
He had many women: actress Romy Schneider, composer Nico, singer and actress Dalida, actress Mireille Darke and others. However, he was officially married only once - to the actress Natalie Delon. This marriage gave birth to his son Antony.
