German Chancellor Scholz Promises to Support Ukraine ‘Like No Other in Europe’ in His New Year's Speech
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in his New Year's address promised to continue supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression, Zeit reports.
In the address, he said that Germany would continue to support Ukraine, but at the same time promised that the government would ‘keep a cool head so that the war does not spread.’
‘Many citizens are looking at Russia's brutal war of aggression against Ukraine with a growing sense of anxiety. I can assure you that we will not leave Ukraine in the lurch and will support it like no other country in Europe,’ Scholz said.
Earlier in December, Scholz had a telephone conversation with US President-elect Donald Trump.
During the conversation, the parties ‘agreed that Russia's war against Ukraine has been going on for too long and that it is important to get on the path to a fair, just and sustainable peace as soon as possible’.
Earlier, Scholz said that his opposition to the supply of long-range Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine was in line with Trump's position.
