On certain sections of Czech highways, the maximum allowed speed could be increased from the current 130 kilometers per hour to 150 kilometers per hour. This would be done through a government amendment to the Road Traffic Act, which deputies may adopt on Wednesday, according to ČTK.

If the amendment regarding the maximum permitted speed is passed, the Ministry of Transport of the Czech Republic warns that it will not apply to all highways.

"It will only be possible to realistically increase the maximum allowed speed on new and upgraded sections of highways where their parameters and traffic intensity allow it. The Ministry of Transport," according to the explanatory note.

The proposed amendments also simplify the penalty point system for drivers. In addition to the government's proposal, lawmakers will also adopt their own amendments, which, for example, soften the rules for the passage of trucks on weekends or overtaking cyclists. Deputies will also decide whether all cyclists should be required to wear a helmet while riding, not just those under 18 years of age.

The government's proposed suggestions leave only three categories of penalty points and increase fines for certain serious traffic violations. Now, for a traffic violation, drivers can receive two, four, or six penalty points depending on the severity of the offense. Drivers will still have their driving licenses revoked for accumulating 12 penalty points, as before. Penalties for blocking trams will be strengthened - drivers who violate the prohibition of stopping or parking and obstruct traffic will now face a fine of 10,000 crowns administratively. The current law provides for a fine of 1,500 to 2,500 crowns for this offense.

The proposed amendment by the government also introduces the possibility of driving a car from the age of 17 under the supervision of a mentor. This innovation is intended to enhance road safety. The idea is to acquire driving skills under the guidance of an experienced mentor driver with an impeccable reputation. From the age of 18, young drivers will be able to drive independently.

Deputies will also vote on changes regarding cyclists. ANO parliament member Zuzana Ožanová proposes that all cyclists wear a helmet while riding, whereas previously this only applied to individuals under 18 years of age. She asserts that health should be protected for all cyclists regardless of age.
