Japan to Support Ukrainian Peace Formula and Contribute $37 Million via NATO
During her inaugural visit to Ukraine, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa assured President Volodymyr Zelensky that Japan will endorse Ukraine's proposed peace plan to end the war with Russia. Japan also pledged a $37 million contribution to NATO's fund for additional support to Ukraine's defense against ongoing Russian aggression, as reported by Kyodo News.
Specifically, Japan will co-chair the working group on radiation and nuclear safety, one of the ten points in Ukraine's 'peace formula' amid the ongoing Russian invasion. The peace plan calls for the immediate withdrawal of all Russian forces from Ukrainian territory.
Yoko Kamikawa further guaranteed Japan's $37 million donation to NATO's fund to enhance Ukraine's defensive capabilities against Russian invasion. Tokyo will also provide five mobile gas turbine generators to help Ukrainians endure the harsh winter, added Kamikawa, expressing Japan's unwavering commitment to "continue supporting Ukraine for the restoration of peace."
Her visit precedes the conference scheduled for February 19 in Tokyo, where Japan and Ukraine will discuss the reconstruction of Ukraine, extensively damaged after the Russian invasion in February 2022.
Arriving in Ukraine by train from Poland on Sunday, January 7, Yoko Kamikawa met with President Volodymyr Zelensky, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, and other high-ranking officials during her visit.
Earlier, it was announced that Japan would provide Ukraine with biofuel technology to support the country's reconstruction. This plan will be presented on February 19 during a meeting in Tokyo, bringing together representatives from the public and private sectors of both countries to discuss support for Ukraine's recovery.
Japan anticipates that biofuel technology will create a new industry in Ukraine, an agricultural country with abundant resources that can be utilized as fuel.
