King Charles III of the United Kingdom, accompanied by Her Majesty the Queen, opened Parliament for the first time since his ascension to the throne, as stated on the official website of the British Crown.

"The impact of Covid and the conflict in Ukraine have created significant long-term challenges for the United Kingdom. That is why the priority of my government is to make tough but necessary long-term decisions to improve this nation," King Charles III said in his address.

He also expressed strong support for Ukraine and Israel in their ongoing conflicts, condemning "barbaric acts of terrorism against the people of Israel." However, he stated that the United Kingdom would work on providing humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The ceremonial state opening of Parliament on Tuesday, November 7, marks the official commencement of the parliamentary year and sets the government's agenda for the 2023-24 session, outlining proposed policies and legislation.

The state opening of Parliament begins with the traditional search of the cellars in the Parliament building, a tribute to Guy Fawkes' Gunpowder Plot of 1605. The ceremony commences in the Prince's Chamber in the House of Lords, with the search led by the Chief Yeoman of the Guard, the King's Guard.

The annual speech, known as the King's or Queen's Speech, is a centuries-old tradition that marks the opening of a new session of the United Kingdom's Parliament. The document is prepared by the government and read aloud by the monarch.

The King's speech lasted for 10 minutes and covered various important issues for the country, including data protection, guidance on criminal sentences, rules regarding tobacco, and plans to expand oil and gas extraction in the North Sea.

The British monarch also discussed government initiatives to control inflation, strengthen energy security, protect consumers from hidden charges, and outlined the reforms that Sunak hopes will gain Conservative support.

Following the speech, a new parliamentary session commences, and both Houses of Parliament debate its contents. The House of Lords engages in debates on various topics mentioned in the speech for five days. Afterward, bills are introduced, and the Lords proceed to work on shaping significant current legislation.

Recall that earlier, King Charles III emphasized the unity of the United Kingdom and France and expressed support for Ukraine in the French Parliament.
