Finland Investigates Land-Based Internet Cable Breakdown With Sweden
An internet cable has been cut on land between Sweden and Finland, and GlobalConnect is currently working to resolve the issue. This was reported by Swedish public broadcaster SVT.
According to the broadcaster, the break occurred on land in Finland. According to journalists, the police suspect intruders.
GlobalConnect emphasised in its statement, quoted by the broadcaster, that the outage was not related to submarine cables.
Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne said the authorities were investigating the matter together with GlobalConnect.
‘We are taking the situation seriously,’ she said.
Earlier, in November, it became known that the Finnish company Cinia's communication cable, which runs under the Baltic Sea and connects Finland with Germany, was damaged.
In the same month, Lithuania reported damage to a communication cable between the country and Sweden, which runs in the Baltic Sea.
A number of European officials have previously suggested that the incident could have been a hybrid sabotage, and Lithuania - whose cable was damaged - is investigating it as possible terrorism.
