Metropolitan Opera to Show Ukrainian 'Mothers of Kherson' in Cinemas Worldwide
Ukrainian opera ‘The Mothers of Kherson’, commissioned by the New York Metropolitan Opera, will be shown in cinemas so that millions of people around the world can see the power of Ukrainian art, said Peter Gelb, general manager of the Metropolitan Opera.
The Gaze reports on this with reference to his interview with Ukrinform.
He emphasises that the story of Ukrainian mothers trying to protect their daughters and then bring them back from occupation, based on real events, was created so that it would exist beyond the fleeting news cycle. "There are so many terrible things happening in the world. It always saddens me when Ukraine is bombed and it's not on the front pages or shown on television. But the news passes, and great art remains forever. This work will forever tell the story and demonstrate the power of Ukrainian art, as well as the power of this human tragedy," Gelb says.
The head of the Metropolitan Opera notes that he has submitted an excerpt from this opera for publication in the New York Times, and the orchestral suite from it will be performed by the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra in various cities around the world.
‘When the opera is finally performed in its entirety in Warsaw next year, and then at the Metropolitan Opera, we will broadcast it in cinemas around the world. Millions of people will see it,’ he assures.
As The Gaze reported earlier, on 2 June in New York, the Metropolitan Opera presented the first excerpt from the upcoming opera ‘The Mothers of Kherson’ about the deportation of Ukrainian children.
