Moldovan President Sandu Decides to Run for Second Term
The current President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, has officially announced her entry into the presidential race.
She reported this on the X network.
‘Honoured and grateful to be nominated today as a Presidential candidate for a second term.
Together, we’ll keep working for a better future – improving lives, ensuring peace, and leading Moldova into the European family. Let’s continue this journey, united and strong!’ - Sandu wrote.
She will run for her party, Action and Solidarity (PAS).
Despite the fact that Sandu is a PAS candidate, her logo does not mention the party. The candidate's slogan is ‘Maia Sandu for Moldova’.
Now, Maia Sandu's initiative group has to be registered by the Central Election Commission. After that, it will need to collect at least 15,000 and at most 25,000 signatures in at least half of the administrative units. Only then will the CEC be able to officially register Sandu as a candidate.
On 1 August, Moldova began the pre-election period before the presidential election and the referendum on European integration to be held on 20 October.
The current government combined the presidential vote with the referendum to mobilise pro-European voters who could also vote for Sandu's re-election.
