Paris police have detained an Australian Olympic participant on suspicion of buying one gram of cocaine.
This is reported by the Australian branch of Sky News.
On Tuesday, 6 August, police in the French capital arrested one of the players of the Australian field hockey team on charges of trying to buy cocaine.
The alleged seller of the drug was also detained along with the hockey player. During the detention, the athlete was found to be in possession of one gram of cocaine, while the "dealer" was found to have seven vials of cocaine, three grams of mephedrone and 75 grams of ecstasy.
The Australian Olympic Committee has already responded to the situation. In a statement, it noted that despite the arrests, no charges have been brought.
"The Australian Olympic Committee confirms that a member of the field hockey team is in custody following his arrest in Paris on 6 August. No charges have been laid. We are continuing to make enquiries and organise support for the team member," Sky News quoted the Australian sports governing body as saying.
The player who was suspected was Tom Craig. The Australian Olympic Committee confirmed this to Sky News.
On 4 August, the Australian men's field hockey team played a quarter-final match at the 2024 Olympics against the Netherlands. The Australians lost 0-2 and ended their participation in the Games.
