Poland Deploys South Korean Tanks to Border With Russia
Poland has deployed the first K2 tanks from South Korea's Hyundai Rotem to the 9th Armoured Cavalry Brigade, which is stationed in Braniewo, a few kilometres from the Kaliningrad region of Russia.
This was reported by PAP with reference to a comment by the spokesperson for the 16th Pomeranian Mechanised Division, Major Magdalena Koscinska.
The tanks arrived at the unit in Branevo on trailers.
‘The next stage will be to equip the tanks with systems used in the Polish army, including communications equipment,’ the spokeswoman said.
The K2 Black Panther tanks are known for their advanced technological solutions, including an active defence system that effectively counteracts missile and anti-tank attacks.
They also have high mobility, which allows them to make quick manoeuvres even in difficult terrain, such as marshes or sands.
The Hyundai Rotem tanks are equipped with precision guidance and fire control systems, which guarantees their effectiveness in various combat conditions.
‘The 9th Brigade received seven tanks in the first batch. Another batch is expected at the end of this year. Currently, the unit has eight trained crews who have been trained by instructors from the 20th Mechanised Brigade,’ said Major Koscinska.
In August 2022, Poland and South Korea signed an executive contract for the purchase of the first 180 tanks worth almost $3.4 billion.
Tank deliveries from Korea are already underway, but the participation of Polish industry in this part of the contract is minimal. The K2 tanks already delivered have only Polish communication systems installed.
