Poland to Bring Border Guards from Germany, Greece, and Finland to Protect Against Illegal Migrants from Belarus and Russia
Poland is hoping to recruit border guards and police from Finland, Germany and Greece to patrol the border with Belarus amid growing concerns about migration pressure from the east to Europe.
Reuters reports this with reference to a senior Polish government official.
"Preparations are in full swing, and these are countries that have extensive experience in border protection. Especially, for example, the experience of Greece can be very useful," the official told reporters.
Poland intends to raise the issue of border protection with Belarus at next week's NATO summit in Washington.
The border between Poland and Belarus has become a flashpoint of tension as Western officials accuse the government in Minsk of using non-European migrants in Belarus' "hybrid war" against the West.
Recently, officials in Poland and Finland have warned that the number of people trying to cross the border through Belarus or Russia could increase significantly in the near future.
In the first five months of 2024, the number of people trying to cross the EU's eastern border almost doubled.
According to Reuters, Greece is expanding the fence on its border with Turkey, and Finland is trying to block a new route for migrants entering Europe via Russia by deploying more border patrols, drones and electronic detectors, as well as building fences.
