Starting from December 22, Ukrposhta introduces the final postage block of 2023 titled 'Ukrainian Carols at Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.' The release commemorates the historical event of the anniversary of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine conducting Christmas worship at the Assumption Cathedral of Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.
In honour of this occasion and the 950th anniversary of the founding of the Assumption Cathedral, Ukrposhta presents a new postage issue. The history of the main temple of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, built in 1073–1078, is dramatic as it underwent significant changes over the centuries. In the early 18th century, after a catastrophic fire, it was transformed into a Baroque style, and in 1941, it was destroyed by an explosion. Only in 2000 was the cathedral solemnly consecrated after a two-year reconstruction.
The plots of the postage issue, created by artist Mykola Kochubey, narrate the unique history of the main Lavra cathedral: from its foundation to restoration, the traditions of monasticism established by the venerable Anthony and Theodosius of Pechersk, and the return of the shrine after years of occupation.
The design of the issue combines the iconostasis of the Assumption Cathedral, colourful carolers with an octagonal star, and the traditional Ukrainian nativity scene. On both sides of the iconostasis are the Venerable Anthony and Theodosius of Pechersk, the founders of the National Preserve Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.
The circulation of the postage block is 140,000 copies, and foil embossing is applied in its production.
The author of the block, postcard, envelope, and 'First Day' stamp is the Honored Artist of Ukraine Mykola Kochubey. He is also credited with last year's Christmas issue, 'Shchedryk. Carol of the Bells.'
The block includes three postage stamps:
'Assumption Cathedral. XVII century (Kyiv)'
'Grant happy years to our glorious Ukraine' — words from a carol that sounded last year in the Lavra during the Christmas liturgy
'Assumption Cathedral. XVIII–XX centuries (Kyiv)'
It is worth noting that on January 7, 2023, the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine Epifaniy led the Christmas service for the first time at the Assumption Cathedral of Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, concluding with the performance of Ukrainian carols. This event restored historical justice, as the OCU is the legal successor of the ancient Kyiv Metropolis, which owned the shrine for over 600 years since its founding. Additionally, the Ukrainian language returned to one of the largest Christian centres in the country, making a significant contribution to preserving the national-spiritual identity of every citizen.
