Ramstein 17 Online Meeting Commences: Pentagon Chief Calls for Strengthening Ukraine's Air Defense
On November 22, the 17th session of the Defense Contact Group for Ukraine kicked off in the Ramstein format, conducted entirely online and featuring the participation of around 50 countries. Secretary of Defense of the United States, Lloyd Austin, opened the session, with the corresponding video available on the official Pentagon website.
Austin stated that both Ukraine and Israel are confronting relentless adversaries intent on their destruction. He highlighted Iran's role in fueling conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, arming both Hamas and Putin. Austin emphasized that Iran's support for the Kremlin and Hamas poses a threat to Ukraine, stability in the Middle East, and the international order based on rules.
"As Ukraine faces another winter of war, I urge this group to provide Ukraine with air defense capabilities to protect its people. I am more than ever confident that the Ukrainian people will remain resilient in the face of challenges because they are fighting for their homes, families, and future. As we dedicate all efforts to support our partner, we must creatively address how we can continue meeting Ukraine's needs. The United States remains committed to its cause," stated the Pentagon chief.
It's worth noting that Lloyd Austin visited Ukraine a few days ago on an unannounced visit. Concerns about the continuation of military aid to Ukraine from the United States have recently increased as debates on this issue continue in the U.S. Congress. However, congressional leaders hope to gather support for additional military aid to Ukraine and Israel before Christmas.
Following the meeting with Pentagon Chief Lloyd Austin on Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine would soon receive a new package of military assistance from the United States. The package includes artillery systems and ammunition, which are currently crucial for Ukraine on the battlefield.
