Romania Defused a Drifting Mine on the Black Sea Coastline
The Romanian Navy conducted a controlled explosion of a mine that was approaching the coast of the Black Sea.
This is reported by Reuters.
According to the Romanian Defence Ministry, early in the morning local authorities reported an unidentified object washed ashore in the Grindul Cituc area in southeastern Romania. The area is part of the Danube Delta bordering Ukraine.
"Based on photographs taken at the site, the object was identified as an anti-personnel mine of the YARM type," the ministry said in a statement.
The mine was successfully destroyed by the military.
The Black Sea plays a key role in the transport of grain, oil and oil products. Its shores are shared by Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia, Turkey, as well as Ukraine and Russia. More than 100 drifting mines have been discovered and neutralised in the Black Sea since the war began, the Romanian navy said.
Since Russia's war against Ukraine began in 2022, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey have set up a joint task force to clear drifting mines in the Black Sea.
