Russia May Suffer Record Losses in War Against Ukraine This Year, UK Intelligence Says

UK intelligence has noted a trend of further growth in the number of Russian casualties in the war against Ukraine in 2025.
The Gaze reports on this with reference to a post by the British Ministry of Defence on social media platform X.
British intelligence has estimated Russia's total losses since the start of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 at around 950,000 dead and wounded.
At the same time, in the first four months of 2025, Russia, according to the British intelligence review, lost approximately 160,000 people.
‘If these losses continue until the end of 2025, it will be the most expensive year of the war for Russia in terms of casualties, continuing a trend of annual casualties,’ the review says.
It also points out that the losses of Russian forces in April 2025 remain on average lower than the ‘very high daily rates’ of late 2024, but ‘are still high in the overall context of the conflict’.
‘So far in 2025, Russia has been unable to turn continued heavy losses into significant gains in Ukraine,’ the UK Ministry of Defence intelligence community concludes.
Earlier, the UK intelligence community also described how Russia is recruiting foreigners to join its armed forces to fight in the war it has waged against Ukraine.
The Estonian Defence Forces Intelligence Centre believes that Russia is continuing its war of attrition and depleting Ukraine's military resources, and there are no signs of preparations for a potential truce.
As The Gaze reported earlier, Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, addressed recent discussions on the war's trajectory, strongly rejecting claims that Russia is winning the conflict. In his statement, Sybiha emphasised the resilience of Ukrainian forces and the strategic setbacks faced by Russia.
