This year, the developers of the most popular and diverse computer games have delighted gamers with a plethora of releases that will take more than one exciting evening to complete. There’s an abundance of new games to suit every taste and preference, and we’ve highlighted the 7 best ones in this article.

From combat fighting to the return of stalkers in the Chornobyl zone, a new interpretation of the "Prince of Persia" story, comic book antiheroes battling a brainwashed Superman, snow battles in "South Park," an epic fight between the Olympian gods against the Titans and Cronus, to Indonesian horror – choose a game that suits your mood and dive into these new captivating virtual worlds.

Tekken 8

Fancy a good fight after a dull workday? You don’t need to step into a boxing ring for that. Tekken 8, the main competitor of the Mortal Kombat series for over twenty years, returns with a new instalment of brutal fighting, keeping the traditions of its prequels and adding some interesting new features. Just like in the previous instalment, the game offers a campaign mode and separate battles in various configurations. Tekken 8 features 29 familiar characters and introduces 3 new ones. Many fighters are now veterans, having been around since the very first Tekken: Yoshimitsu, King, Jack the robot, and Paul Phoenix. The game’s novelty is the Heat Reward system, encouraging players to adopt a more aggressive style and avoid retreating into a defensive shell. For convenience, the developers have divided the controls into two categories – classic and simplified for casual gamers. The latter mode allows players to execute complex combos with a single button press – lazy fighters will be thrilled.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl

One of the most anticipated releases of 2024 from Ukrainian developers once again takes players back to the desolate outskirts of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, teeming with dangers. The game's release has been postponed several times, making the reunion with beloved characters from previous instalments and the picturesque landscapes of the Zone, which now includes several new locations, even more thrilling. The main character – a stalker nicknamed Skif – ventures into the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant in search of artefacts and adrenaline, just like other adventurers. The game is expected to combine elements of first-person shooter, survival horror, and immersive sim genres, offering a large open world for exploration. The game will have official Ukrainian localisation and voiceover, but there will be no Russian language (guess why?).

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

Developers of one of the most iconic gaming franchises have decided to break away from the canon – Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is not a continuation but an independent game in the series, featuring significant changes in both the game universe and genre. This time, players won’t control the Persian prince but an immortal warrior named Sargon. The game belongs to the action-adventure genre with a side-scrolling format. The main character can jump, slide, and run through the air to move quickly between platforms. The protagonist’s mission is to search for Prince Hassan, who disappeared at the edge of the world, in the mountains of Qaf and the cursed city within them. Sargon is quite advanced: he fights with dual blades, can jump forward in time, or leave special “shadows” of himself that he can return to at any moment. Over time, he can be upgraded to become stronger, and new tools can be added to his equipment to solve puzzles.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

For all fans of DC’s "dark heroes" and specifically the Batman: Arkham game, the direct continuation of the story, titled Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, is being released. The twist is that this will be the first instalment in the Batman franchise without Batman himself. At the beginning of the storyline, the antagonist Brainiac seizes Metropolis and controls the minds of the city’s inhabitants, including superheroes – Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, and others. Instead of Bruce Wayne, players will be offered four antiheroes – Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark, who can be switched between at any time in single-player mode. Each character has their own set of skills and fighting style. The Suicide Squad will have to face brainwashed superheroes with their small team in a vast open world to save not only the city but the entire world.

South Park: Snow Day!

This funny 3D action-adventure computer game, developed by Question LLC in collaboration with South Park Digital Studios, is based on the cult animated series South Park. The town of Pittsburgh is buried in a snowstorm because, one evening, Eric Cartman prayed to God, asking for a Snow Day and the cancellation of school. And so it happened, with the cynical kids staging yet another snowball fight in a team rivalry game. The central characters of the animated series – Eric Cartman, Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, and Kenny McCormick – are at the heart of the story, participating in various battles and completing tasks. The gameplay of South Park: Snow Day! combines action and adventure, allowing players to freely explore the town, interact with different characters, and take part in mini-games. The story is filled with the humour and absurdity characteristic of the series, featuring numerous quotes and references to its episodes.

Hades 2

The sequel to one of the best games of 2020 by Supergiant continues the saga of the Olympian gods and begins with the Olympian army besieging the Titan Cronus, who was once overthrown by his own children. Cronus has returned from imprisonment, determined to regain his power. While Zeus and the elder gods fend off attacks from Cronus's army, the sorceress Hecate has raised a heroine capable of halting the invasion – Melinoë, the princess of the underworld. Melinoë has her own scores to settle with Cronus: he took away her home, chained her father Hades, and, using his power over time, captured her mother and brother. The developers once again deliver a gripping storyline, complete with references to Greek mythology, as well as engaging music and gameplay. The vibrant battles with Scylla and Cronus are executed so impressively that you’ll find yourself returning to the game time and again.

DreadOut 2

The sequel to the adventure horror game, deeply rooted in eerie Indonesian mythology, continues the story of high school students who, while travelling through Indonesia, stumble upon an ancient abandoned town. Naturally, this town is inhabited by ancient Asian monsters that start hunting the tourists. The game's heroine, Linda, can detect evil spirits using her smartphone and camera, enabling her to fend them off and escape the cursed town. In the second part, the vengeful spirits come for Linda in her everyday life, aiming to settle old scores. The world of the sequel has expanded significantly, introducing not only new locations but also non-linear game scenarios. Overall, this game is highly recommended for all fans of exotic Asian horror.
