Trump Offers Ukraine Security Backing, But Outside NATO Framework

President Donald Trump informed European and Ukrainian leaders of the US's readiness to provide Ukraine with security guarantees under certain conditions, albeit under certain conditions, The Gaze reports, citing Politico.

During a virtual meeting organized by Germany on Wednesday to coordinate the positions of the US and Europe ahead of Trump's summit with Putin, several informed sources reported that the US is ready to provide Ukraine with means to deter future Russian aggression, provided that a ceasefire is achieved. At the same time, Trump stressed his readiness to take on such commitments only if they are not part of NATO.

Trump's openness regarding possible security guarantees for Ukraine has sparked cautious optimism among European officials, although the president himself did not specify their specific form, discussing only general principles.

The US President made it clear that the US would not supply weapons or troops directly to Ukraine, limiting itself to selling arms to Europe for use by Kyiv. 

European and Ukrainian officials view Trump's desire for a ceasefire positively, but are concerned about the outcome of his talks with Putin.

It is worth noting that the United States and NATO have introduced the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, aimed at accelerating the provision of cost-effective weapons and military systems to Ukraine. The goal is to enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities, ensuring it can better respond to threats, while also supporting efforts to achieve lasting stability and peace in the region.

As The Gaze informed earlier, Germany announced its contribution of $500 million to NATO’s PURL initiative to provide critical U.S.-made weapons to Ukraine, reaffirming its position as the leading European supporter of Ukraine’s defense.
