Trump's Team Insists it is not Pressuring Zelensky to Accept a ‘Peace Deal’
Information appeared about the latest deadlines from the US president.
The Gaze reports on it according to WSJ.
The day before, Western media reported that US President Donald Trump had given Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a few days to make a decision on the ‘peace plan.’ Subsequently, senior officials in the Trump administration began to insist on the opposite, saying that they were not pushing Ukraine towards an agreement that it did not like, writes The Wall Street Journal.
They say that the goal is an agreement acceptable to both sides that guarantees Ukraine's sovereignty and protects it in the long term. At the same time, American officials point to the days of direct negotiations between NSDC Secretary Rustem Umerov and chief US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner as proof that Washington's intention is not to sell out Kyiv.
According to the American official, three main issues have already been identified:
which territory Ukraine should transfer to Russia as part of the peace plan;
whether Ukraine will ever be able to join NATO;
how Russian assets currently frozen in Western Europe can be used to finance Ukraine's reconstruction.
The official said that the previous provision prohibiting Kyiv from joining NATO had been removed from the current peace plan. However, the new version does not resolve this issue at all.
Earlier, Reuters wrote about Europe's fears that the US could conclude an agreement that would not punish Russia and would only increase the threat to the continent's security. European leaders also fear that they will have to accept a possible rapprochement between Washington and Moscow. At present, it seems likely that any peace agreement will allow Russia to at least retain control over the captured Ukrainian territories. The Trump administration has also not ruled out Russian claims to the rest of Donbas, which Moscow has been unable to capture after nearly four years of full-scale war.
