UK Pledges Extra £10 Million to Bolster Ukraine’s War-Damaged Energy Grid
The United Kingdom has pledged a further £10 million to support urgent repairs to Ukraine’s energy system.
The Gaze reports this, referring to Sky News.
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper announced the new funding package in Brussels ahead of a NATO ministerial meeting, underscoring London’s determination to strengthen Ukraine’s resilience as winter intensifies.
“Today I am announcing an extra £10 million from the United Kingdom to support the restoration of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure,” Cooper said, highlighting that recent Russian bombardments had once again left hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians without electricity.
She stressed that Moscow shows no intent to de-escalate the conflict. “Despite diplomatic efforts by the United States and Ukraine, President Putin seeks only to intensify the war,” she noted. “We witnessed continued attacks over the weekend – large-scale strikes that caused widespread power outages.”
Cooper reiterated that Britain remains committed to standing with Ukraine for as long as necessary. “Putin wants to plunge Ukraine into darkness and we will continue to work to switch the lights back on. We will continue to support the Ukrainian people, defend Ukraine’s sovereignty, and advance a just and durable peace rooted in the security of Europe and NATO,” she said.
The UK pledge comes as several European partners expand their own support. Ireland has announced €125 million in military and energy assistance for Ukraine, while Sweden is preparing a €100 million winter aid package. Germany has also recently allocated additional funding to strengthen Ukraine’s infrastructure for the winter season.
As The Gaze reported earlier, Ukraine and the United Kingdom have signed a licensing agreement for the production of the Ukrainian Octopus interceptor drone at British facilities.
