Ukraine, US Set for Fresh Peace Talks with European Partners Involved
Ukraine is starting a new round of negotiations with the United States on ways to end the war with Russia.
The Gaze reports on it, referring to a post made by the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov on social media platform X.
On Friday, a Ukrainian delegation led by Rustem Umerov will begin a new round of negotiations with the American side, dedicated to proposals for ending Russia's war against Ukraine. According to him, European partners will also be involved in the negotiation process.
"We are committed to a constructive process. We have already held preliminary consultations with our European colleagues and are preparing for further discussions with the American side," he stated.
Umerov also stressed that after this round of talks, a report will be sent to President Zelenskyy.
“We are acting clearly in line with the priorities defined by the President: Ukraine's security must be guaranteed reliably and in the long term,” he concluded.
The negotiations are taking place against the backdrop of active efforts by the administration of US President Donald Trump, who is seeking to bring an end to the nearly four-year war.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held extended negotiations with a US delegation in Berlin on December 14–15, meeting with special envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential adviser Jared Kushner as part of Washington’s peace initiative. Speaking at the close of the German-Ukrainian Economic Forum, Zelenskyy described the discussions as difficult but productive, emphasizing that Ukraine is focused on achieving a dignified and sustainable peace.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy then told journalists that Ukraine is preparing five key documents, some of which include legally binding security guarantees modeled on NATO’s Article 5. The discussions reportedly covered Ukraine’s recovery, including the creation of a multibillion-dollar reconstruction fund, support for displaced persons, and assistance to families of fallen soldiers.
He emphasized that Ukraine will not relinquish Donbas or recognize Russian control over occupied territories, noting that while progress has been made on security issues, territorial questions remain the most complex and unresolved.
The US is also seeking to accelerate agreement on a peace plan and is gradually increasing pressure on Russia, preparing new energy sanctions targeting Moscow’s oil exports if President Putin rejects a deal with Ukraine. Measures could target Russia’s shadow tanker fleet and trading firms, with potential announcements dependent on ongoing negotiations and approval from President Trump.
As The Gaze previously reported, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has identified three of the most difficult issues complicating negotiations on a potential peace agreement with Russia.
