Ukraine's State Registries Face Largest Cyberattack by Russia in Recent Times: No Data Loss Threat Identified
Today, Ukraine's state registries suffered the largest cyberattack in recent times - Russians attempted to disrupt the country's critical infrastructure.
This was reported by the Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration and Minister of Justice Olha Stefanishyna
As a result of the targeted attack, the Unified and State Registers, which are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, have been temporarily suspended.
The Ministry of Justice has decided to temporarily suspend the operation of all registers administered by the Ministry of Justice to avoid further threats.
Despite the large-scale cyberattack, all the data in the state registers has been preserved. The Ministry of Justice has a full backup of all state registers for the entire period of their existence.
‘We have a complete backup of all state registers for the entire period of their existence. That is, in the form in which the registers functioned before the hacker attack, they will be restored and are being restored now,’ Stefanishyna said.
Hackers from the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces are behind the cyberattack on the registers of the Ministry of Justice, the Security Service of Ukraine said.
Firstly, the Ministry of Justice will restore the work of state registers that record the actions of notaries in order to avoid chaos in notarial actions during the period of restoring the registers.
The following registers will also be restored first: The State Register of Civil Status Acts; the Unified State Register of Legal Entities and Individual Entrepreneurs; and the State Register of Rights to Real Estate and Their Encumbrances.
‘The time for priority restoration will be approximately up to 2 weeks. The specifics of providing services to citizens will be provided tomorrow during the day,’ the official said.
She assured that after the full restoration, a thorough analysis of the attack will be carried out jointly with the relevant authorities to strengthen protection against similar interventions in the future.
