Ukraine’s Top General: Russian Troop Buildup Signals New Offensive in Northeast

Ukraine’s top military commander, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, has issued a stark warning about the growing threat of a renewed Russian offensive in the country’s northeast, particularly in the embattled Kharkiv region, The Gaze reports, citing Reuters.
“I dedicated two days to working with units in Kharkiv region,” Syrskyi announced via Telegram on Saturday, noting that he had met with field commanders to assess the evolving front-line situation and ensure troops had what they needed.
The region has been a focal point of intense fighting since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. This summer, Moscow has continued to push along various sectors of the front, relying on overwhelming numbers of infantry to gain ground.
In recent months, Russian forces have also managed to carve out a foothold in the northern Sumy region, signaling an expanded offensive intent.
“The Russians are looking to press with numbers, but we have to be ready, use appropriate tactical and technological solutions not to allow the (Russians) to move forward,” Syrskyi emphasized.
The general’s visit underscores concerns in Kyiv over Russia’s strategy of attrition — one that leverages its numerical superiority in both manpower and munitions. Ukrainian forces, meanwhile, are striving to adapt with advanced tactics and targeted use of technology.
