Ukrainian Franko National Theatre to Represent Country at Avignon Arts Festival in France
The Ukrainian National Academic Drama Theatre named after Ivan Franko will represent the country at one of the oldest and most prestigious arts and theatre festivals in the world, the Avignon Festival in France, showcasing the play "Caligula."
This was announced by the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.
"Set against the backdrop of war, 'Caligula' offers a contemporary interpretation of the tyrannical Roman emperor, resonating with Ukraine's struggle for independence. The scenography allows the audience to delve into themes of power and morality, illustrating the timeless issue of dictatorship and tyranny. Caligula's reign is a metaphorical prison, reflecting the pervasive surveillance and control characteristic of totalitarian regimes. Echoing Orwellian themes, the play explores manipulation of truth and the erosion of individual freedoms," the statement reads.
"This is one of the first performances created under conditions of full-scale war," said the play's director Ivan Uryvsky.
"The topic of dictatorship must be addressed and worked on. This story shows that humanity repeats its mistakes, but we need to remember them to avoid repeating them again," he added.
The play "Caligula" is supported by the European Union and the International Renaissance Foundation as part of the joint initiative "European Renaissance of Ukraine."
The performance can be seen from 5 to 11 July, and tickets can be purchased via the link provided.
