Ukrainian Troops Could Help Defend the EU
Ukraine’s “battle-tested” military could help deter a Russian attack
The Gaze reports on referring to Politico.
European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius said that if the war in Ukraine ends with the signing of a peace agreement — something the Kremlin is not yet ready for — the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as the most experienced army in Europe, should be present throughout the EU's “border region,” including the Baltic states, Politico quotes him as saying. Therefore, they could be sent to help defend this flank.
“It would be good if, after peace is established in Ukraine, the battle-hardened Ukrainian army were ready to be present in all countries of our border region, starting with the Baltic region, as well as in Lithuania, alongside the German brigade and US rotational battalions,” he said. The experience of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is invaluable to allies.
“We Lithuanians have learned from our history that it is better to have several guarantees for our security,” Kubilius also said, adding that Article 5 of the NATO Collective Agreement should be reinforced by the EU's own security provisions “with a clear mechanism for how they will be implemented.”
On October 9, the Verkhovna Rada adopted draft law on sending units of the Ukrainian Navy to other countries during martial law.
