UN: Strike on Kryvyi Rih Deadliest for Children in Three Years of Ukraine War

The recent Russian missile strike on Kryvyi Rih, a city in eastern Ukraine, has been identified as the deadliest attack for children in the past three years of war against Ukraine, according to UN representatives. The statement was made on Tuesday during a United Nations Security Council meeting by Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, The Gaze reports, citing Ukrainian media.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in  Ukraine, which confirmed many victims, reported that this was the deadliest strike that harmed children since February 2022,” the UN Under-Secretary-General stated.

As a result of the attack on  Kryvyi Rih 18 people were killed, including 9 children, and more than 60 others were injured, including 12 children.

Fletcher further emphasized that drone attacks have continued in recent weeks, inflicting civilian casualties and damaging homes, schools, and playgrounds. He noted that, according to Ukrainian authorities, over 90 civilians were killed in frontline regions in just the past week.

In total, he said, OHCHR has officially confirmed the killing of at least 12,910 civilians, including 682 children, and the injury of nearly 30,700 people across Ukraine between February 24, 2022 and March 31, 2025. Still, the real numbers might be higher.

In addition, 3.7 million people in Ukraine remain internally displaced due to the war, and new waves of evacuations are currently taking place in the northeast of the country due to the war. Almost 7 million refugees from Ukraine have been recorded worldwide, mostly in Europe.

As The Gaze previously reported, on Friday evening, Russian forces fired a missile at the city of Kryvyi Rih in eastern Ukraine.  The ambassadors of the European Union, the United States and the United Kingdom have reacted with sadness and outrage to the Russian attack on the Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih.
