USA to Participate in Global Peace Summit in Switzerland
Representatives of the United States of America will attend the Global Peace Summit, which will be held in mid-June in Switzerland. This was announced by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. However, she did not specify who exactly will represent the key ally of Ukraine, nor whether it will be President Joe Biden.
"We have been actively involved in each of the previous Ukrainian peace summits. The US government is participating. And we will be represented at this upcoming summit," stated the White House Press Secretary.
According to Karine Jean-Pierre, supporting Ukraine is crucial for the United States. She emphasized that Ukraine must have all the necessary means to defend itself against Russian aggression and to ensure a just and lasting peace.
Earlier, media reports suggested that President Joe Biden is likely to miss the Global Peace Summit due to his re-election campaign. Specifically, he has a fundraising event scheduled in California on those dates.
As a reminder, the Global Peace Summit, initiated by Ukraine, will take place on June 15-16 in Switzerland. Heads of state and government from around the world are expected to attend. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that 90 countries have already confirmed their participation in the summit.
Among the high-profile attendees are European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Charles Michel, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and French President Emmanuel Macron. The Ecumenical Patriarchate will also be represented, along with at least two African countries - Malawi and Cape Verde.
President Zelensky has also called on US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping to join the event. "I am appealing to world leaders who have so far remained on the sidelines of the summit’s global efforts - US President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Please, demonstrate leadership in promoting peace. Genuine peace, not just a pause between strikes... Support the peace summit with your personal leadership and participation," urged President Zelensky.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy also stated that Russia is attempting to normalize its actions against Ukraine, and no country can stop such aggression without external assistance. He reminded that Ukraine already has "the world's most extensive experience" of listening to Russian lies during negotiations.
