When Will Ukraine Lift Martial Law If the Peace Process Succeeds?
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said martial law in Ukraine will be lifted only once the country receives credible, functioning security guarantees, The Gaze reports.
“Without security guarantees, this war has not genuinely ended,” Zelenskyy emphasized. “With such a neighbor, there is always the risk of another attack. That is why guarantees matter so much.”
According to the president, the end of martial law would coincide with the moment Ukraine secures binding guarantees as part of a broader peace framework negotiated with international partners. These guarantees would include monitoring mechanisms and a sustained presence of partner countries.
Zelenskyy noted that Kyiv is working toward finalizing a comprehensive, 20-point plan to end the war together with the United States, European countries, and allies. If all documents are completed and signed simultaneously, Ukraine would receive the guarantees needed to formally consider the war concluded.
“We are serious about ending the war,” he remarked. “If we manage to finalize all documents and sign them together, that very moment will be the signal for all of us that the war has ended. We do not intend to waste time.”
The president added that the Ukrainian military’s assessment will also play a decisive role in determining the timing of lifting martial law. Ukraine’s top commanders must confirm that all necessary infrastructure and security arrangements are in place.
Zelenskyy also clarified that international partners would be responsible for monitoring any ceasefire arrangements, with all relevant details embedded in the security guarantees. However, he said discussions on patrolling any demilitarized zones remain preliminary, noting that current talks focus instead on the concept of a future free economic zone.
Ukraine is currently under martial law through February 3, 2026, following a 90-day extension approved by parliament in October.
As The Gaze informed earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has acknowledged that any future peace deal for Ukraine must be secured through legally binding ratification of security guarantees.
