Australian Tank Donation to Ukraine Faces Delays Amid US Approval Issues

Australia's commitment to donate a fleet of M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine has hit a significant roadblock, as the aging military vehicles are still grounded in Australia, awaiting final approval for their transfer. Despite the initial announcement over six months ago, the tanks have yet to depart for Ukraine, leaving uncertainty surrounding the planned aid package.
The Gaze reports on this with reference to ABC News.
The Australian government pledged to send 59 retired M1A1 Abrams tanks as part of a broader $245 million military assistance package to Ukraine. However, defense sources have revealed that delays are largely due to ongoing resistance from the United States, which is required to authorize the export of the American-made tanks to a third country. The formal approval process has yet to be finalized, further complicating the timeline for delivery.
The situation has raised concerns within military circles, with some speculating whether Ukraine is still interested in receiving these particular tanks. One anonymous defense official highlighted the vulnerability of the Abrams tank's roof, a critical point in the vehicle’s design, especially in a war dominated by drone warfare. Additionally, logistical challenges in maintaining and operating these tanks within Ukraine’s warzone have been flagged by American defense officials.
While political and military figures have expressed concerns, including the possibility of a peace settlement that could render the tanks unnecessary, the Australian Department of Defence remains optimistic. A spokesperson emphasized that the delivery of the tanks is still on track for 2025, and the country continues to collaborate with Ukraine on the logistical aspects of the transfer.
Despite these setbacks, Australia has reiterated its unwavering support for Ukraine, with the Australian government pledging over $1.5 billion in aid, including more than $1.3 billion in military support. The M1A1 tanks were retired from Australian service and are being replaced by more advanced M1A2 tanks. Although the vehicles have never been deployed in combat, their delivery to Ukraine remains part of Australia’s broader commitment to assist Ukraine in defending itself against Russian aggression.
As the situation unfolds, the future of this military aid remains uncertain, but the Australian government’s commitment to supporting Ukraine's defense efforts remains clear.
As The Gaze reported earlier, partner countries of the Drone Coalition, which includes Australia, have allocated €20 million from a joint fund for the purchase of tactical intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance drones for the Ukrainian Defence Forces.
