EU Parliament Approves 2025 Budget and New European Commission Team Headed by Von der Leyen
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, signed the EU budget for 2025 after MEPs supported it by a majority vote. The document became law.
This was reported by Metsola herself on the social network X, as well as by the press service of the European Parliament.
The total budget for 2025 is €199.4 billion.
The 2025 budget will be 6% higher than this year's, which means an increase of €10 billion.
For the 2025 EU budget, MEPs have secured more effective support to address issues such as healthcare, humanitarian aid, border management and climate change.
The European Parliament recalled that in February 2024, during the revision of the EU's long-term budget, the EP achieved a significant increase in spending on key priorities, such as support for Ukraine, which MEPs were able to maintain in the 2025 budget.
In the draft budget, the European Commission provided €15.2 billion for Ukraine under the Ukraine Facility programme.
‘This budget is aimed at addressing pressing issues, including Russian aggression in the war against Ukraine, ongoing migration pressure, the escalating crisis in the Middle East, the impact of natural disasters and, most importantly, the competitiveness of our economies. This will ensure that the EU is able to respond effectively to these pressing realities,’ said Johan Van Overtveldt, Chairman of the European Parliament's Budget Committee.
Unlike national budgets, the EU budget is primarily focused on investment to generate growth and opportunities across the European Union.
Also, during a plenary session in Strasbourg, the European Parliament approved by a majority vote the composition of the new European Commission, which was previously proposed by the current and elected President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. This was also reported by Roberta Metsola on social media.
The President of the European Parliament believes that this structure played an important role in shaping the political programme, selecting candidates and voting for the new European Commission.
According to her, the new Commission will start working on 1 December.
