European Leaders Assess Trump-Putin Talks

Following the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska, the European Union is looking forward to a trilateral summit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and is ready to help get it ready.
The Gaze reports on it, referring to a joint statement by European leaders published on the European Commission's website.
The heads of Europe's leading countries and European institutions issued a joint statement on the results of the meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska.
The document was signed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and European Council President António Costa.
‘This morning, President Trump briefed us and President Zelenskyy following his meeting with the President of Russia in Alaska on 15 August 2025. The leaders welcomed President Trump's efforts to... end Russia's aggressive war and achieve a just and lasting peace,’ the statement said.
The leaders quote Trump as saying that ‘the next step now should be further negotiations with President Zelensky, with whom he will meet shortly.’
‘We are also ready to work with President Trump and President Zelensky on preparing a trilateral summit with the support of Europe,’ the leaders of European states and European institutions emphasise.
‘We clearly state that Ukraine must have inviolable security guarantees in order to effectively defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. We welcome President Trump's statement that the United States is ready to provide security guarantees. The ’coalition of the willing‘ is ready to play an active role,’ the document emphasises.
‘It will be up to Ukraine to make decisions on its territory. International borders must not be changed by force,’ they added.
As is known, after the meeting in Alaska, Trump said that he had agreed with Putin on an exchange of territories and that ‘Zelenskyy must accept this.’
He also said that he would participate in the meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin, if it takes place.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that on Monday, 18 August, he will fly to Washington for talks with Trump.
