Sotheby's is to auction its first work of art created by a humanoid robot using artificial intelligence algorithms. On 31 October, the auction house will sell AI God. Portrait of Alan Turing (2024) by humanoid artist Ai Da. A portrait of mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing was created using artificial intelligence algorithms by Ai-Da Robot, iol reports.

The work, titled ‘The God of Artificial Intelligence,’ is a portrait of computer science pioneer Alan Turing created by Ai-Da, an ultra-realistic robot artist equipped with AI algorithms and mechanical arms. The 7.5-foot-tall portrait, featuring stunning imagery with muted tones and broken facial planes, will be part of Sotheby's Digital Art sale from 31 October to 7 November. It is expected to fetch between $120,000 and $180,000.

British art dealer and gallery owner Aidan Miller has created the humanoid robot Ai-Da, depicted as a woman with a black bob wearing a T-shirt and denim overalls. The robot draws and paints using a camera in its eyes, AI algorithms and a robotic arm.

Michael Buanna, Head of Digital Art at Sotheby's, highlighted the strategic timing of this auction, noting the growing interest in the intersection of art and technology, especially among young collectors.

Luba Elliott, a curator who specialises in artificial intelligence in the creative industries, noted that while there have been several auctions for artificial intelligence, this one is unique because Ai-Da is a humanoid robot. Elliott believes that this auction will help to expand the definition of artificial intelligence and push the boundaries of creative expression in the digital age.

Aidan Meller, director of Ai-Da Robot Studio, highlighted the deeper significance of the piece, noting that it evokes Alan Turing's concerns in the 1950s about the use of AI.
