French President Macron Supports US Approval for Ukrainian ATACMS Strikes on Russia
On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro called the United States' decision to allow Ukraine to use long-range missiles in Russia “quite right”. He said this on Monday on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Le Monde reports.
‘This is absolutely the right decision, I understand that it was also caused by a profound change in this conflict that cannot be underestimated, namely the involvement of North Korean troops on the side of Russia,’ he told reporters.
Macron added that the only force escalating the conflict today is Russia, which has attracted North Korea, which is a very aggressive state with a nuclear programme and very long-range missiles.
‘So this is really a turning point in this war that led to this choice of the Americans,’ Macron said.
The French president also believes that the joint declaration of the G20 summit would have benefited from being clearer on the conflict in Ukraine, and that it ‘does not fit the formulas that we have already been able to get’.
In the declaration, members of the group, which includes Russia, said they support ‘any constructive initiative’ aimed at achieving a ‘just and lasting peace’ in Ukraine, without condemning Russia's invasion.
The day before, leaders of the world's 20 largest economies gathered in Brazil on Monday for their annual summit, where they discuss the war in Ukraine and Gaza, trade, climate change and international security.
