German Chancellor Scholz to Visit UK Prime Minister Starmer to Discuss Cooperation, Ukraine Situation
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will travel to the United Kingdom to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the German newspaper Stern reports.
The meeting will take place on Sunday, 2 February, at the Chequers country residence in the suburbs of London.
The meeting will focus on bilateral relations and relations between the EU and the UK, as well as current international issues and the further development of transatlantic relations.
According to Reuters, citing Starmer's spokesman, the two leaders are expected to discuss issues related to Ukraine and the Middle East.
Starmer is also expected to attend an informal EU defence summit in Brussels on Monday. The meeting will also be attended by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Recently, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said that the German military could take part in guaranteeing the security of the demilitarised zone in Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire. And Starmer assured that London is ready to play a ‘full role’ in possible peacekeeping in Ukraine, although he does not see such a prospect at the moment.
On 22 January, Scholz said that even after the war is over, Ukraine's future needs to be secured, so the allies will soon discuss security guarantees for Ukraine.
