President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that Ukraine is holding negotiations with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to secure additional equipment for electricity generation ahead of winter.

The Gaze reports this, referring to Ukrinform.

Speaking to journalists in Kyiv, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine identified two companies, one in Germany and another in Italy, capable of producing the necessary generation systems.

He asked Berlin to redirect part of its humanitarian funding to finance the purchase of this equipment, emphasizing that such assistance could significantly boost Ukraine’s energy output amid ongoing Russian attacks on infrastructure.

“I showed Chancellor Merz the amount of equipment we need. Germany has substantial humanitarian funds, and I asked him to reallocate part of that package to buy this energy equipment. This could produce a significant volume of electricity,” Zelenskyy said.

The President noted that a similar discussion took place with Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, who expressed readiness to help and proposed exploring both gas supply and power-generation options.

“She asked which would be faster – the equipment or gas, and said she would consult with Italian companies. Both options work for us,” Zelenskyy added.

According to Zelenskyy, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has also pledged to assist with an additional “energy package,” while the Netherlands confirmed plans to contribute to Ukraine’s energy resilience.

In the interview, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also announced that Ukraine has already secured around 70% of the funds required to finance gas imports for the upcoming heating season, as the government works to ensure stable energy supplies amid ongoing Russian attacks.

“Gas today is a matter of import opportunities, which depend solely on financial support. We have already found 70% of the required funds. The government will ensure the full amount,” the president said.

He added that repair and restoration works on the electricity network continue across the country, though certain areas still face challenges.

“In general, electricity supply is being restored everywhere. The most difficult situation is in Sumy region, particularly in the city of Shostka,” Zelenskyy noted.

The president also underlined the importance of strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities to protect the energy grid from Russian strikes.

As The Gaze reported earlier, German Economy and Energy minister Katherina Reiche announced that Germany is set to expand its contribution to the Energy Support Fund for Ukraine to a total of €450 million.
