Germany to Transfer IRIS-T Air Defence Systems to Ukraine by Christmas
The German government plans to hand over IRIS-T short- and medium-range air defence systems to Ukraine before the Christmas holidays. This was announced at a briefing in Kyiv by Major General of the Bundeswehr and Head of the Special Staff for Ukraine Christian Freuding, Ukrinform reports.
‘We have recently handed over artillery, howitzers, tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, launched a programme of attack drones, and the next IRIS-T systems - SLM and SLS - will arrive soon, on the eve of Christmas,’ the general said.
Military assistance will continue, including after the New Year and the elections in the US and Germany, the military official said.
He added that Germany will also continue to support Ukraine not only in the military, but also in the energy and humanitarian spheres.
In September, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed that a total of 17 more IRIS-T systems are to be delivered to Ukraine. Four of them are to be delivered this year, and the rest - in 2025.
This was made possible by increasing the production capacity of the German manufacturer Diehl Defence.
