Golden Carriage and Throne: Props From “The Crown” Series To Be Sold at Auction

The sixth season of the Netflix series "The Crown," depicting the British royal family, is concluding, and now props and costumes from the filming will be auctioned. Approximately 450 items from all six seasons of the series will be put up for auction.
As reported by the London auction house Bonhams, the lots include a gilded carriage, custom-made furniture, clothing, and a replica of the coronation throne from Westminster Abbey made of fiberglass.
The Daily Mail notes that a combination of 3D printing and ceramic sculptures cast from fiberglass was used to create the replica of the Gold State Coach, a gilded coronation carriage. The carriage is two-thirds smaller than the original, created in 1762. Prop maker Jason Shuckalski, who crafted the carriage for the series, studied hundreds of photos of the actual carriage at Buckingham Palace to ensure accurate design.
"Iconic costumes, props, and set decorations from 'The Crown' have been meticulously researched," said the auction house. "They were created with impressive attention to detail."
Left Bank Pictures, the production company of the popular historical drama, will be selling the items. The show's creators hope to raise up to £1 million from the sale of props.
The auction is scheduled to take place in February 2024, and the proceeds will go to the National Film and Television School to establish the Left Bank Pictures—The Crown Scholarship.
According to co-founder and executive producer of the show, Andy Harris, "The Crown" utilized over 2,500 props and filled 18 transport containers at the Elstree studio in Hertfordshire with props and costumes.
This includes the powder-blue ballgown (£7,000) worn by Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II in the first season and the engagement ring of Princess Diana (£2,000–£3,000) played by Emma Corrin.
It is expected that the costume worn by Claire Foy during the coronation scene could fetch between £30,000 and £50,000.
A custom-made replica of Princess Diana's "revenge dress," worn when she made a public appearance after her separation from Prince Charles, is estimated to cost between £8,000 and £12,000. The 1987 Jaguar version of Diana's XJ-S could be valued at up to £20,000.
The most expensive lot is anticipated to be the replica of the gilded coronation carriage, estimated at £50,000. The throne is valued at £20,000, and the entrance doors to the prime minister's residence are estimated at £30,000. A precise replica of the Buckingham Palace wrought iron gates is priced at £8,000.
The show has been praised for the authenticity of its props and set decorations since its premiere in 2016.
