UK plans to invest £100 million in creating nine new research centres in the field of artificial intelligence and training regulatory bodies in handling this technology, Reuters reports.

Approximately £90 million will be allocated to establishing centres focused on utilizing AI in areas such as healthcare, chemistry, mathematics, as well as collaborating with the United States on responsible AI use.

Additionally, £9 million will aid regulatory bodies in addressing risks and utilizing AI capabilities. This includes developing tools for risk monitoring across various sectors, from telecommunications and healthcare to finance and education.

"AI is evolving rapidly, but we have demonstrated that people can move just as fast. By employing a sector-specific, flexible approach, we have begun to immediately respond to risks," said Michelle Donelan, the UK's Minister for Technology, in a statement.

Recall that in November 2023, an international summit on AI safety took place in Great Britain. At that time, over 25 participating countries signed the "Bletchley Declaration," which opens a new chapter dedicated to identifying risks of common concern and developing intergovernmental policies to mitigate them.

The Bletchley Declaration is a comprehensive document outlining a program for identifying risks associated with the development of AI technologies. Its aim is to promote scientific understanding of these risks and the development of international policies to reduce them. The document emphasizes joint government research in AI security, one of the main objectives of which is the coordinated development and implementation of risk-oriented AI regulation policies to prevent adverse effects.

Summit participants emphasized that artificial intelligence is a valuable technology for economic growth and sustainable development. However, it cannot evolve without oversight and requires to be established "rules of the game."

Also, a recent report by the International Monetary Fund noted that artificial intelligence will affect nearly 40% of jobs worldwide. Some professions may disappear due to this technology, leading to a redistribution of responsibilities in many sectors.
