Lithuania Installs Anti-Tank Barriers on Border With Russia's Kaliningrad Region
Lithuania has installed anti-tank barriers on a bridge across the Neman River near the border with Russia's Kaliningrad region, Defence Minister Laurinas Kasciunas wrote on Facebook.
According to him, the Lithuanian army is currently testing the defences installed on the bridge, assessing ‘how they hold back heavy equipment’. He also noted that some bridges will be reinforced, while others are prepared to be blown up, but only on the basis of intelligence.
‘Physical fortifications (anti-tank hedgehogs, dragon's teeth) are only auxiliary and will be covered by fire,’ Kasciunas said.
Earlier, the head of the Lithuanian Defence Ministry said that at the next meeting of the State Defence Council, a decision would be made to create a tank battalion in the country.
As you know, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have called on the European Union to build a defence line along the bloc's 700-kilometre border with Russia and Belarus. Some EU diplomats have estimated its cost at around €2.5 billion.
In September, it was reported that Lithuania was developing a plan for mass evacuation of the population in case of war, man-made disasters and natural disasters.
