Moldovan Parliament Approves National Defence Strategy Through 2034, Identifies Russia as Primary Threat
The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova has voted in favour of the National Defence Strategy of the Republic of Moldova for 2024-2034. Presenting the Strategy, Defence Minister Anatolie Nosatîi said that ‘Russia wants to prevent our country from defending its national interests, as well as to reduce the state's ability to advance its strategic goals’.
The National Defence Strategy of the Republic of Moldova reflects the state's firm determination to ensure a defence and security system that, above all, guarantees the prosperity of its citizens, Anatolie Nosatîi said at the plenary session of the legislature.
The official clarified that ‘the continuation of the military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and the possible expansion of the zone of military operations towards the borders of the Republic of Moldova would pose a direct threat to our state’.
‘The illegal presence of the armed forces of the Russian Federation on the territory of the Republic of Moldova impedes the legal functioning and international recognition of this state. At the same time, the status of neutrality is not an obstacle to the constant development of cooperation with partner states and organisations in the field of security and defence,’ Anatolie Nosatii said.
The document, developed under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Moldova, defines priority areas for strengthening national defence.
The Strategy is aimed at ensuring a stable security environment and enhancing the state's ability to respond effectively to crises and threats.
