Official New Political Start Between Europe and Syria: German and French Foreign Ministers Meet New Syrian Leadership
On Friday, the foreign ministers of Germany and France are flying to Syria together to meet with the country's new government, DW reports.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock is travelling to Damascus with her French counterpart Jean-Noel Barrot. They will meet with rebel leader Ahmed al-Sharaa.
‘My trip today - together with my French counterpart and on behalf of the EU - sends a clear message to the Syrians: a new political starting point for Europe and Syria, for Germany and Syria, is possible,’ Burbock commented.
‘We have in mind the goal that millions of Syrians also have in mind: that Syria can once again become a respected member of the international community,’ she added.
The French Foreign Minister added that together, France and Germany stand by the Syrian people and will facilitate a peaceful and demanding transition for the benefit of the Syrians and regional stability.
At the end of December, the German government initiated several projects to assist Syria totalling €60 million.
