Poland Schedules Presidential Elections for May 18
Marshal of the Polish Sejm, Szymon Hołownia, announced the decision regarding the date of the presidential elections. The first round will take place on May 18, according to Rzeczpospolita.
According to Hołownia, the decision on the date was made after consultations with the State Electoral Commission.
Hołownia also stated that two weeks after the first round, on June 1, a second round will be held if necessary.
The election campaign will officially begin on January 8.
Until March 24, it will be possible to notify the State Electoral Commission about the creation of an electoral committee to participate in the presidential elections. By March 31, regional electoral commissions must be established, and by April 4, candidates for the presidency must be registered.
As of now, the following candidates have confirmed their participation:
- Magdalena Biejat (Vice Marshal of the Senate, New Left),
- Szymon Hołownia (Marshal of the Sejm, Poland 2050, also supported by PSL),
- Marek Jakubiak (Free Republicans),
- Sławomir Mentzen (leader of New Hope, candidate of Confederation),
- Karol Nawrocki (head of the Institute of National Remembrance, candidate supported by PiS),
- Romuald Starosielec (Polish Renewal Movement),
- Rafał Trzaskowski (Mayor of Warsaw, candidate of Civic Coalition),
- Marek Woch (Non-Partisan and Local Government Federation).
