Poland Signals Possible Transfer of Up to Eight MiG-29 Fighter Jets to Ukraine
Poland is preparing to transfer between six and eight MiG-29 fighter aircraft to Ukraine as the jets are phased out of service in the Polish Armed Forces by the end of the year.
The Gaze reports this, citing a statement made by Poland’s Deputy Minister of National Defence Cezary Tomczyk to Polish broadcaster TVN24.
He said that the aircraft scheduled for decommissioning in late December could either be scrapped, placed in museums, or sent to Ukraine to bolster its air force amid Russia’s ongoing war.
“In my view, it is clear what should happen to them,” Tomczyk said, adding that Warsaw is also holding talks with Kyiv on potential technology transfers as part of broader defence cooperation.
Poland’s General Staff has previously stated that Warsaw intends to hand over its remaining MiG-29 fighters once they are fully withdrawn from active service, with discussions reportedly including Ukrainian technologies related to drone and missile production.
Former Polish defence minister and security expert Janusz Onyszkiewicz told Ukrainian media that the transfer of the remaining aircraft could take place as early as January or February next year.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki, however, said he had not been briefed on the defence ministry’s plans to transfer the MiG-29s, highlighting internal coordination challenges within Poland’s leadership.
As The Gaze reported earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to travel to Warsaw on December 19 for talks with Polish President Karol Nawrocki to address key bilateral and regional security concerns, economic cooperation, and sensitive historical matters shaping relations between the two neighboring countries.
