Putin Will Not Escape Justice: Ukraine Pushes for Special Tribunal

On April 8, the Ukrainian delegation head to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Mariia Mezentseva-Fedorenko, discussed key issues on Ukraine’s agenda, including the return of deported children, prisoner exchanges, and the establishment of a special tribunal for Putin, The Gaze reports, referencing FREEДOM TV.
Mariia Mezentseva-Fedorenko emphasized the importance of the PACE resolution titled "Foreign Interference - A Threat to Democratic Security in Europe." The resolution, which received broad support, directly addresses Russian disinformation and interference in European elections. Last year, elections at various levels were held in 60 countries, from presidential to local elections. And there were many examples of Russian interference.
Mezentseva-Fedorenko noted, “It was crucial to highlight Russia as the main threat, not only through its propaganda but also through its illegal financing and influence in media during elections. ”
Ukraine’s delegation also pushed for a special tribunal for Putin. Mezentseva-Fedorenko revealed that, “From a legal point of view, everything is perfectly done. Even the most complicated issues of immunities and other things are regulated in these documents. And more than 40 countries have signed them.” She stressed that the tribunal will hold Russia's leadership accountable for its war crimes, even if the trial occurs in absentia.
In addition to legal actions, Ukraine is advocating for compensation for victims of Russian aggression. Over 20,000 applications have already been submitted through Ukraine’s Diia online platform, seeking redress for various war crimes, including torture, illegal deportations, and loss of life.
As Mezentseva-Fedorenko concluded, “Diplomatic efforts are not in vain. Pressure on Putin and Russia must continue, including expanding sanctions and strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities. We will not stop until justice is served.”
She also added with a touch of humor, “Europe should take off its pyjamas, put on a suit and get ready for battle when it wakes up.”
As The Gaze previously reported, the Council of Europe has completed technical work on the Special Tribunal for Russia.
