This year, the Emmys mark the 75th anniversary and on this occasion, the organizers took an unprecedented step. For the first time since the iconic award was conceived in 1948, the Emmy statuette will change its design.

“When the 75th Emmy Awards air this September, millions of viewers will be a part of history - the Emmy statuette will possess a different glistening look: Adorning the base of the revered figurine will be etched the simple but powerful inscription "75",” the Academy said in a statement.

75 years ago, the Emmy organizers rejected 47 design proposals for the Award, and it was not until the 48th that the Television Academy finally accepted it. It was a silver statuette covered in gold, depicting a glistening, winged muse of art with an atom of science in her grasp. So, who will get this historic award?

The first round of voting for the 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards nominees has ended. More than 20,000 members of the Television Academy chose their favorites to find out who will be lucky enough to compete in this year's nominations. The official lists of nominees will be announced on Tuesday, July 12. In the meantime, there is still time to learn more about the list of nominees.

Who has a chance to compete for an Emmy this year?

The American Emmy Awards annually recognize the best TV products in dozens of categories. However, several of them are traditionally considered to be the most popular. Thus, this year 163 TV series have applied for participation in Outstanding Drama Series, 95 applicants are trying to get into Outstanding Comedy Series nomination, and 51 applications have been submitted for the Best Miniseries or Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series category.

Only eight series will be selected for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series categories.

Outstanding Drama Series

Industry observers have been talking about how HBO is becoming a dominant player in the drama genre for a long time. However, but this year’s Outstanding Drama Series Emmy race emphasizes more than ever the fact that a show's chances of being nominated is based on what network it airs on. Despite the Warner Bros' Discovery streaming service dropping the HBO brand, the pay-cable pioneer TV brand is still the main source of prestige content. As a result, viewers vote for the Emmy nominees they know well from HBO such as House of the Dragon, The Last of Us, Succession, and The White Lotus, which are expected to beat the record for the number of nominations in one season (four). At the same time, Dragon House is the most likely favorite.

Though popular, the main issue with 1923 and Bad Sisters breaking into the category is that their respective networks Paramount+ and Apple TV+ simply do not have the same track record as HBO competitors. Apple TV+ has had The Morning Show and Severance do well, and even win some Drama categories, but the streaming service’s primary 2023 competitor created by Emmy nominee Sharon Horgan has nowhere near the buzz of those two shows so its chances of winning are unlikely to be high.

However, there are other worthy contenders among the drama series, such as Disney's Andor and FX's The Old Man, as well as AMC's Better Call Saul.

Last year, 171 works competed for representation in this category, in 2021 - 133, and the record was set in 2020, when 199 series applied for the nomination.

Outstanding Comedy Series

Emmy voters are people of habit. And perhaps that's why the farewell season of Apple TV+'s Ted Lasso has every chance of winning the third consecutive trophy, making it a record-breaking year for the TV award. However, this year Ted Lasso faced a serious challenge from Abbott Elementary, ABC's sitcom, which last year received seven nominations for its 13-episode debut season, winning three of them, including Best Writing for Quinta Brunson and Supporting Actress Sheryl Lee Ralph. Abbott was even better in its full second season, proving even to skeptics that funny, touching stories can be told in just 22 minutes.

However, Emmy, Abbott and Ted Lasso are far from the only shows in play. The creators of other cult series, such as Prime Video's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and HBO's Barry, would also like to compete for their Emmy statuettes. Debutantes don't want to miss the opportunity either, this year several fresh premieres - FX's Bear, Apple's Downsizing and Netflix's Wednesday are competing for nominations. Moreover, in 2023, the category has a shorter list compared to the 118 nominees in the previous year, 68 in 2021, and 111 in 2020.

Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series

Dahmer the Monster by Netflix, Dahmer the Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story by Netflix and George and Tammy by Showtime are being actively discussed in the category of miniseries or anthologies.

This year's 51 nominations are up compared to 61 in 2022, yet still much higher than 2021's 37 and 2020's 41.

Best Drama Actor and Best Drama Actress

This year's competition in the acting categories promises to be fantastic. In the Best Drama Actor and Best Drama Actress nominations, the favorites are the three actors of Succession, Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong, as well as Pedro Pascal for his two works in The Last of Us and Disney's The Mandalorian.

As for the dramatic actress, the four stars of The Yellow Jackets - Melanie Lynskey, Juliette Lewis, Tony Cypress and Sophie Nelisse - are competing for the spotlight.

There are 68 actors up for Best Comedy Actor, including veterans Steve Martin and Martin Short from Only Murders in the Building, and Bob Odenkirk from another AMC series, Lucky Hank.

The Lead Comedy Actress nomination features 76 contenders, including such social media megastars as Latin American influencers Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building) and Jenna Ortega (Wednesday).

And for the first time ever, Ukrainian actor Zakhar Shardin from Mykolaiv has been shortlisted for the 2023 EMMYs in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie category. When Russia began shelling his hometown with heavy artillery, Zakhar was filming the second season of the Apple TV+ series Little America. It was for this role that the actor was nominated for the 2023 Emmy category.

Once the voting is over, six nominees will be determined in all acting categories.

In two weeks, the list of nominees to be shortlisted will be announced, but we will have to wait a little longer for the winners of the historic 2023 Emmy Awards. The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment, will air on September 18 at 8:00 p.m. PT on Fox.
