The Full List of Nominees for the 2024 Oscars Announced: Ukrainian Film '20 Days in Mariupol' Included
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the full list of nominees in 10 categories for the 96th Academy Awards. The Ukrainian film 20 Days in Mariupol has been nominated for the Feature Documentary category, the Academy's website says.
The film by eyewitness Mstislav Chernov tells the story of the brutal siege and occupation of the Ukrainian port city by the Russian terrorist army in February 2022, which killed more than 20,000 civilians.
The film was created together with Chernovyi by photographer Yevhen Malolietka and producer Vasylisa Stepanenko. The film shows the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the bombing of a maternity hospital in Mariupol and the rescue of the author and his colleagues from the Associated Press from the city surrounded by Russian occupiers. Earlier, 20 Days in Mariupol won the Audience Award at the IDFA 2023 festival in Amsterdam.
As expected, the films are also competing for the 2024 Oscar: Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer with 13 nominations; the fantasy film Les Miserables starring Emma Stone with 11 nominations; and Martin Scorsese's drama Killers of the Flower Moon with 10 nominations. The summer pink blockbuster Barbie received 8 nominations.
The Oscar ceremony will take place on 10 March.
