The President of Lithuania Arrived in Kyiv Unexpectedly
President Gitanas Nauseda of Lithuania arrived in Kyiv on June 28 with an unannounced visit. He will participate in events commemorating the 27th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of Ukraine and will also discuss a range of issues with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky. This was reported by the press service of the Lithuanian President.
In particular, the press service stated that the Lithuanian leader will discuss with the President of Ukraine the agenda of the NATO summit in Vilnius in July, as well as Ukraine's negotiations for EU membership, Lithuania's assistance, and the European Union's assistance to Ukraine.
President Nauseda arrived in Kyiv from The Hague, where the heads of seven states discussed further support for Ukraine the day before. From Kyiv, the President of Lithuania will travel to Brussels, where the European Council meeting begins on Thursday.
It was also announced earlier today that Lithuania has acquired two launcher systems of the NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System) for Ukraine, which will be delivered to Ukraine in the near future.
In early June, it was also reported that Lithuania is preparing another package of military aid for Ukraine, including millions of units of ammunition and anti-drone systems. This was announced by the Lithuanian Minister of Defense, Arvydas Anusauskas.
Currently, Lithuania is actively preparing for the upcoming NATO summit, which will take place in Vilnius on July 11-12. This event is expected to announce a new powerful package of military aid from the United States. It is also expected to announce specific steps regarding Ukraine's integration into NATO.
During the summit, the Vilnius City Municipality plans to display over 30,000 Ukrainian flags throughout the city to demonstrate support for Ukraine.
"We have been actively supporting Ukraine since the beginning of the war, and we want our support to be visible during the NATO summit. We understand the scale and importance of this meeting in the context of global political events, and we also realize the opportunity to draw even more attention to the situation in Ukraine and its desire to become a member of the alliance," said the Mayor of Vilnius, Valdas Benkunskas.
According to the municipality, at least 33,000 Ukrainian flags will be displayed in Vilnius. This number is symbolic, as Ukraine could become the 33rd member of NATO. The mayor called on residents and administrators of apartment buildings to join the initiative, as the organizers will take care of everything necessary.
