UK and G7 Allies to Impose Fresh Sanctions on Russia to Cripple War Effort

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced that the United Kingdom, in coordination with fellow G7 nations, is preparing a new wave of sanctions aimed at undermining Russia’s military capabilities and restricting its ability to fund the ongoing war against Ukraine.
The Gaze reports on this with reference to BBC.
Speaking at the G7 summit in Alberta, Canada, Starmer said the measures are designed to “increase economic pressure on the Kremlin” and signal to President Vladimir Putin that it is in both his and Russia’s best interests to pursue peace in earnest.
“The fact is, Russia doesn’t hold all the cards,” Starmer stated. “These sanctions will tighten the screws on Russia’s energy sector and reduce the revenue fueling its illegal war.”
While details of the package remain under wraps, Downing Street confirmed that the sanctions would target the Russian military-industrial complex.
A government spokesperson explained that the G7 summit was still underway, and it would be premature to reveal the full scope of the measures before official coordination is complete.
One of the central topics of the summit is the economic war on Russia’s energy exports.
The European Commission is pushing to lower the price cap on Russian oil from $60 to $45 per barrel, with Ukraine advocating for a more aggressive cap of $30.
During a private 20-minute conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also urged a stronger international stance against the Kremlin.
However, the unity of the G7 on the sanctions front remains uncertain. President Trump, who announced his early departure from the summit due, expressed skepticism toward new sanctions, arguing they come with high economic costs for the United States.
The summit’s working breakfast session on June 17 was titled “A Strong and Sovereign Ukraine,” underscoring continued support among Western allies for Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity.
